1989 was the year when communism came to an end in Poland.
It was a year that marked the culmination of the long-standing efforts of Polish patriots fighting for freedom and democracy.
To understand the phenomenon of this time, we need to go back to the 1950s when, after World War II, we fell under the sphere of Soviet influence and the communist system was imposed on us. Some Poles never accepted the imposed system and, at any cost, tried various ways to overthrow it from Poland.
In the first years after the war, a resistance movement was built, and various social groups attempted to rid Poland of the "yoke" of communism. Over time, we gained experience and learned how to fight against the communists.
The success of 1989 would not have been possible without the student protests in the 1960s or the workers' strikes, which mobilized the formation of numerous opposition organizations in the 1970s. Based on these experiences, through trial and error, we established the largest social movement in the world in 1980, known as the Solidarity Trade Union (NSZZ Solidarność). At its peak, the movement had over 10 million members. Under the unified slogan of "Solidarity," we brought together the efforts of all social groups that had been fightinG for democracy and a better Poland for years. We built a great monopoly against the communist monopoly and thus "knocked the teeth out of the Soviet bear." And when it could no longer "bite," we dealt the final blow to communism in Poland through the first free elections on June 4th, 1989.
We achieved more than many of us could have even dreamed of. Each month of that year contributed another brick to the construction of a new Poland and strengthened the democratic foundations of our homeland. The whole world looked at Poland with admiration, and we became an example for all countries in the Eastern Bloc. We showed how social and political realities could be changed peacefully, with hardly any gunfire.
When I look back to those times, it's hard to believe that in one generation, we were able to achieve so many ground breaking changes.
